How to register your address in Berlin (Anmeldung)

Step-by-step guide to completing your Anmeldung in Berlin. Bürgeramt appointments, documents, and tips for getting a slot.

Anmeldung in Berlin, the complete 2026 guide

The Anmeldung is your first and most important task in Berlin, you must register your address within 14 days of moving in. Without the Anmeldebestätigung you get at the end, you can't get your tax ID, open a proper bank account, or apply for a residence permit. The appointment itself takes five minutes. Getting one is the hard part. Here's how to do it in 2026.

The Berlin-specific challenge

Appointment scarcity

Slots can be booked out two to six weeks ahead, and longer in peak months (September, October and January). New appointments are released daily in batches, in 2026, typically at 8:00, 10:00 and 13:00 sharp.

Search Berlin-wide, not just your district

On the portal, choose 'Termin berlinweit suchen' (search Berlin-wide). An appointment in Spandau is just as valid as one in Mitte, and outer districts usually have more availability.

What to bring

In 2026 officials are stricter about physical vs digital copies, always bring printouts. Do not staple or bind the documents.

How to actually get an appointment

Refresh in the morning

New slots and cancellations appear most often between 7:00 and 8:00 on weekday mornings. Refreshing the booking page every few minutes usually surfaces something within an hour or two.

Call 115 if the portal is frozen

The Berlin citizens' hotline (115, Mon–Fri) sometimes has access to emergency slots and cancellations that don't appear online, and staff can book on your behalf. Service is mostly in German.

Use the digital contact form

If you can't find a slot within 4 weeks and your visa is expiring, some districts offer a digital contact form to request an appointment. This creates a paper trail proving you tried to comply with the law.

Appointment-finder tools

Free tools like the All About Berlin appointment finder scan for new slots automatically every few minutes and can save hours of manual refreshing.

Will I be fined if I miss the 14-day deadline?

In practice, rarely

Fines of up to €1,000 are theoretically possible, but as of 2026 Berlin remains lenient given the appointment shortage. If you have an appointment confirmation, even for a future date, you generally won't be fined. Book your slot the day you confirm your address, not the day you need the certificate.

On the day and afterwards

At the appointment

Arrive 10 minutes early, find your number (Vorgangsnummer) on the waiting-room screens, and go to the desk when called. The questions are basic, which floor, how many people, registering alone or with family. You get your Anmeldebestätigung immediately. Make several copies.

Combine services

Up to three services can be handled in one Berlin appointment. If you also need a resident parking permit (Anwohnerparkausweis) or police clearance (Führungszeugnis), ask politely at the counter.

Your tax ID follows by post

The Steuer-ID arrives 2–4 weeks later from the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern. Make sure your name is on your mailbox and doorbell, or the letter gets returned as undeliverable.
