Register your address (Anmeldung)
Required administrative step after moving into accommodation. Must be completed within 14 days.
Why Anmeldung matters
What is the Anmeldung?
Registration is required by law for anyone living in Germany. It enables you to receive your tax ID, access banking services, and complete residency processes.
When to register
You must register within 14 days of moving into your accommodation. Late registration can cause delays with banking, employment and visa processes.
Documents you need
Gather these before your Bürgeramt appointment. Missing any item may mean rebooking weeks later.
How registration works
Book a Bürgeramt appointment
Registration is done at your local Bürgeramt (citizens' office). Book online — in busy cities, check daily for cancellation slots.
At the appointment
The process takes about 10–15 minutes. You'll receive your Anmeldebestätigung (registration confirmation) immediately.
After registration
Your tax ID (Steuer-ID) arrives by post within 2–4 weeks. You'll need the Anmeldebestätigung for banking, insurance, and your residence permit.

Common challenges
Appointment availability
In major cities like Berlin, Bürgeramt appointments can be booked out weeks in advance. Check online daily for cancellation slots, or try smaller offices outside the city centre.
Landlord confirmation delays
Some landlords are slow to provide the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. Request it when signing your lease — it's legally required.
Temporary housing
If you're in temporary accommodation (hotel, Airbnb), some offices allow registration with proof of address. Rules vary by city.
